Therapeutic Recreation Course is an overview of the history, philosophy, concepts, and issues in the field of therapeutic recreation. The helping nature of the recreation therapist role and the importance of self-awareness within the profession will be addressed. The importance of leisure activities and the common barriers to recreation participation are discussed. Introductory information will be provided and discussed on a wide range of disabilities, medical conditions, therapeutic support environments, and conceptual models of therapeutic service.

Topics/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Describe the helping nature of the service provider role
  2. Describe the history, role, and function of therapeutic recreation
  3. Identify disabilities and barriers for individuals and apply the role of therapeutic recreation
  4. Identify values and beliefs conducive to providing effective service to people
  5. Define professionalism as it relates to providing services in the helping role
  6. Compare and contrast various therapeutic recreation conceptual models and recognize the importance of using a model in practice
  7. Compare and contrast various living option levels and the differences in the service delivery of therapeutic recreation
  8. Identify the purpose of a team approach and how to work within various healthcare teams
  9. Define issues that affect job related stress associated with the role of helper.

This course is targeted for those interested in additional training in gerontology and involved in careers such as:

  • Recreational Therapists or Therapist Assistants,
  • Kinesiologists,

  • Foreign-trained health care professionals.

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools (Zoom for Education) to help instructors and students connect and collaborate live online. Students should have access to a computer, laptop or smartphone to access the class sessions. To be able to participate in webinars, students need a webcam and headset, or a microphone and headphones, along with a high-speed internet connection.

Part Time: January 06, 2021 – March 17, 2021

  • Students must devote at least 3 hours per week to attend live webinars.
  • Webinars will be held on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm PST .
  • Outside of live instructional periods, students will be expected to take part in various independent and/or group activities.
