This course will cover a comprehensive review of the protection of refugees under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act( “IRPA”). Commencing with an overview of refugee protection under the IRPA, the course will examine the concepts of convention refugees, persons in need of protection, burdens and standards of proof and other concepts of importance to this area of immigration law.

Course Prerequisites

Three years relevant work experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant.

This course provides additional and supplemental training for those already in careers working such as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Topics Covered/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to understand:

  • The concepts of refugee protection, convention refugees, persons in need of protection and pre-removal risk assessment
  • The rules and procedures relating to the granting of refugee protection, grounds for persecution, risk of “torture”, designated countries of origin, decisions on claims, exclusions, extradition and appeals to the refugee appeal division.

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools (Zoom for Education) to help instructors and students connect and collaborate live online. Students should have access to a computer, laptop or smartphone to access the class sessions. To be able to participate in webinars, students need a webcam and headset, or a microphone and headphones, along with a high-speed internet connection.

  • February 11, 2021 – May 06, 2021
    • Students must devote at least 3 hours per week to attend live webinars.
    • Webinars will be held on Thursdays from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm PST.
    • Outside of live instructional periods, students will be expected to take part in various independent and/or group activities.


Registration fee for this course is $495.

This course does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training. As such, it was not reviewed.
